A Tale of 4 Countries
18 May
Below is a simple spreadsheet with some statistics on four countries that share a similar population and land area: Belgium, Israel, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti. Some of the differences between them are shocking. Israel for example is about thirty times richer than Haiti with less cultivable land. All of these countries except Haiti make at least $ 3 billion a year in tourism (Haiti’s entire economy is about $ 4 billion, not counting remittances). The government of the Dominican Republic spends about 8 times more per year than that of Haiti. The Belgian government spends more than 250 times more than Haiti’s per year. Belgium also exports 500 times more than Haiti does. Why is Haiti so different? More detailed annotation to follow. Please comment below. Comments are moderated.
